Your terrorist is our freedom fighter

Director: Tainui Tukiwaho
Company: Native Agency Aotearoa

September 2007. After 20 years on the international boxing circuit, Tū is coming home. And he’s got plans involving his cousin Eunice, brother Pōtiki, and their childhood gym – Muhammad’s.

Fourteen-year-olds Stevie and her comic-drawing best friend Chiefy aren’t that thrilled about the intrusion into their world of Tū and his big ideas. It’s hoha. As hoha as the white vans parked up for days all over Tan-Knee and the undercurrent of unsettling activity rumoured to be driven by the Te Urewera Prophets aka the Tame-Itis.

Tan-Knee is the first in the Te Urewera Trilogy by Maraea Rakuraku.

EUNICE
Their terrorists are our…
PŌTIKI
Freedom fighters.
EUNICE
It’s all a matter of whose, side of the story you’re on.
PŌTIKI
And who’s telling it.
