Acclaimed American playwright, Tennessee Williams penned emotional powerhouse hits like A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, BABY DOLL, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER but it was his tender and autobiographical ” memory ” play, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, that catapulted him from obscurity to international fame.
THE GLASS MENAGERIE follows a family trapped by dreams and delusions in 1930s St Louis. Times are tough. Amidst the turmoil of a changing world, solo mother, Amanda Wingfield, a faded Southern belle, is hellbent on finding a better future for her emotionally fragile daughter, Laura, while her restless son, Tom, is caught between his duty to his family and his desire for freedom.
Deftly blending humour and pathos and suffused with the eloquent poetic language that became Tennessee Williams’ trademark, The GLASS MENAGERIE is an achingly beautiful study of four people struggling to conform to the expectation of others.
Featuring Circa stalwart Simon Leary, as Tom and Hera Dunleavy (Blithe Spirit) as Amanda, with Jackson Burling as ‘The Gentleman Caller’ and exciting newcomer Ashley Harnett as Laura, this is a rare opportunity to experience the urgent relevance of Tennesee Williams’ haunting and uncompromising masterwork.
