Sepelini Mua’au is a theatre maker, director and actor working across Aotearoa. His practice spans devised theatre, new writing, large-scale and institutional work and interdisciplinary performance, with a particular interest in Pasifika-led and decolonised theatre processes.
As a performer, Sepe’s credits include work with Circa Theatre, BATS Theatre, Capital E, A Slightly Isolated Dog, Tawhiri, and across NZ Fringe and regional tours. Notable productions include Second Unit (Tawhiri), PSA: Election 2020 and PSA: Election 2023 (Circa), Transmission: Beta (Circa), All of the Above (Ohokomo), Don Juan (A Slightly Isolated Dog), and a national tour of Stravinsky’s The Soldier, directed by Sara Brodie, in collaboration with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. He has also worked extensively with Barbarian Productions and interactive performance contexts.
Sepelini’s directing credits include co-directing Toi Whakaari’s 2021 Graduate Show Clean Up in Aisle 3 with Jo Randerson and Barbarian Productions, directing Toi Whakaari solos and second year regional touring work; and directing FLAMES: A Hip Hop Musical (Measina Festival 2022; Kia Mau Festival 2023). Sepe assistant directed U R HERE (NZ Fringe 2023) and most recently co-directed The Handlers by Poata Alvee McKree for Kia Mau Festival 2025. The Handlers went on to a critically acclaimed season, receiving multiple Nga Whakarākei O Whātaitai – Wellington Theatre Awards nominations and wins, including Production of the Year.
Sepe is a graduate of Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, completing a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Theatre in 2015 and a Master of Arts in Theatre in 2017. His play Blackout, developed through Playmarket’s Brown Ink programme, explores concussion, masculinity and responsibility for young Samoan men. Sepe’s current work and trajectory is informed by ongoing research into decolonised theatre-making and Pasifika-led creative processes.
